Michael’s Story:
I was born in Moroto, Uganda and when I was younger, I lived there with my family (which consisted of my mother and father, my four brothers, my one sister, and I). In Moroto we were suffering from drought, hunger, and the war. We lived there until my father was shot and killed by rebels. My mother took us and we left Moroto for Jinja. When we got to Jinja we didn’t have food or shelter so we wandered on the streets seeking food, help, and shelter. To get money we would collect maize (corn) and firewood. I collected scrap metal and used charcoal and sold it for money for food and shelter. I also went to the streets to beg for money. We did not have enough food or money to satisfy our need but we had to bear with the situation. The rent was so high and so many people had to contribute, but sometimes we still did not have enough money for rent.
