Esther’s Story
Esther was born in the Moroto region where she lived with her mother, father, and 6 siblings. There were 4 girls (Brenda, Esther, Lowenyang, and Koddeti) and three boys (Thagal, Ngirro, and Friday). Life in Moroto had always been hard for this family; they had to contend with tribal and civil wars, constant hunger, and terrifying drought in the area. In 2006, Esther’s father was shot to death and their home was destroyed. The mother could not support her children, so in 2006 three of the kids (Brenda, Friday and Esther) were sent to live with their aunt in Jinja. Life was better in Jinja, but not much. The auntie lived in a slum called Masese, and the children were forced to run to the streets daily to search through rubbish pits for enough sustenance to survive. None of the children had been able to attend school because the cost was not one that they could afford. in 2008, The Peace for Paul Foundation found Esther’s brother, Friday and now Esther and Brenda have also been able to join the Peace for Paul family and to attend school. All three of the siblings are now together and off of the streets looking toward a future full of hope.
