Irene’s Story

Irene lived with her mother (Naru) and father in a slum area called Masese. Her mother is a good woman who does her best to care for her children but is uneducated and unemployed so struggles daily to do so. Irene’s father is a drunkard who spends any money that the family is able to make on alcohol. He beats Naru and the children claiming that the marriage is “on a contractual basis” and that she will soon be forced to leave the home. Naru makes paper bead necklaces and sells them to travelers in Uganda. Unfortunately this business is seasonal and money only comes in when tourists are in the area.

Irene’s mother is very grateful for what she calls “a golden opportunity” for Irene. She “wishes the best to the Peace for Paul Foundation for all of the good things it has provided to all of the children from Masese and the streets”. She says: “Let God bless the Peace for Paul Foundation and I love you all over there”.
