Luke’s Story
Luke’s family left the dangerous region of Moroto and found themselves in Jinja City, searching for a better life. Unfortunately a life free from hunger, pain and misery was nowhere to be found. The reasons why are unclear, but when Luke was just a baby, his father left his mother alone to care for four children. As the mother was unable to provide for herself or for her children, it wasn’t long until her youngest died of illness. Soon after, the eldest sibling was sent to live with a grandmother who (the mother was told) would be able to better care for him. Luke’s mother has asked about her son, but only has been told that he is now helping the grandmother. It appears the grandmother is not taking care of him, but rather the other way around. Luke’s mother tries her best to care for her remaining children by collecting firewood to sell and by rummaging through the trash bins for food and clothing.
Luke was rescued from the misery of his life in the slums when one of our visiting board members noticed him screaming in pain. He had wounds on his feet that were not being treated and he looked very malnourished. She scooped him up, fell in love and never looked back. She had his wounds treated and he will now grow up looking toward his future with hope.
